Today is #COGivesDay: an #opportunity to give time, #money, or resources to @LiteracyOut. Please consider the gift of literacy this year.
“It’s long been known that America’s school kids haven’t measured well compared with international peers. Now, there’s a new twist: Adults don’t either.
In math, reading and problem-solving using technology–all skills considered critical for global competitiveness and economic strength–American adults scored below the international average on a global test…” [Denver Post]
The Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), which assessed literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills of 5,000 adults in 24 countries, including the United States, provides a snapshot of the literacy and numeracy skills around the globe. The U.S. mean literacy score was below the international average–ranking 16th out of 24 countries. Those with poor literacy skills are more than twice as likely to be unemployed. Socioeconomic status in the U.S. is highly related to literacy skills. The U.S. has the highest levels of income inequality and literacy skills inequality. Our kids cannot be successful unless their parents maintain a basic standard of living. Healthy parents means healthy families. Healthy families mean our children attend school ready to learn.
