According to today’s issue of USA Today, 20.6% of the U.S. population ages 5 and older speak a foreign language at home. This is up from 13.8% in 1990. Literacy Outreach has also seen an increase during that time period for English as Second Language (ESL) learners. In 1994, we served three ESL students. Today 85% of our student’s speak a language other than English as their first language. Of the 85% of the non-native speakers, 80% speak Spanish as their primary language and another 3 percent speak Fulani as their first language. We have more than 100 students waiting for tutors inGarfieldCountyto help them improve their basic literacy skills. Please volunteer today.
